Proposta d'actuacions de restauració i millora de l'estat ecològic del Riu Brugent

Main Objective: By improving the longitudinal connectivity of the streams, maintaining their plant communities, and improving the physicochemical parameters of the water, the overall ecological status of the river ecosystem is enhanced. Improving these parameters is essential to achieve the quality objectives set by the Management Plan of the Catalan River Basin District and to avoid compromising the environmental quality of the ecosystem.

Project Summary

In the municipality of Les Planes d’Hostoles, the Brugent River and the streams flowing into it feature obstacles that hinder this natural flow, such as weirs and floodable fords crossing paths. This can severely affect the fauna and vegetation of these already highly sensitive ecosystems.

Furthermore, the river also faces other pressures:

  • Overcrowding (Over-frequentation): although currently regulated, the high influx of visitors remains a challenge for its conservation and causes environmental degradation.

  • Droughts: water scarcity, increasingly frequent due to the climate crisis, reduces available habitats for many species.

  • Invasive species: plants such as the giant reed (Arundo donax) and other ornamental plants displace native vegetation.

In recent years, actions have been carried out to improve the environmental quality of the river, such as planting riparian vegetation and removing invasive species. The new project focuses especially on restoring river connectivity, starting with the Cogolls stream, which is highly visited due to its natural attraction, such as the Molí dels Murris pool.

The ultimate goal is to ensure that the river and its tributaries can function naturally and maintain biodiversity, especially in a context of climate change and habitat loss.

  • Improvement of river connectivity at a floodable ford on the Cogolls stream.

  • Planting and restoration of helophytic vegetation on the stream banks.

  • Raising population awareness through school workshops, guided tours of the area, improved signage, and communication actions on social media.
